Located on the border between Europe and Asia, Turkey has benefited extensively of late from the idea of a potential membership within the EU. As a result, the liberalization process and direct foreign investments have directly contributed to the dynamic ICT sector. In 2006, the ICT market size was estimated at 14 billion EUR. Hardware sales continue to grow, and over 10% of ICT gross revenues come from the sales of these products. The sales of assembled PCs also contribute significantly to the global revenue, representing over 50% of all PCs sold.

The software and service sector includes about 1,300 companies and accounts for 10% of the total ICT revenue. The most important progresses was achieved in the area of e-applications in ERP, technical infrastructure, information security and legal infrastructure. The software sector makes up 14% of the total Turkish ICT market. The estimated growth of the software market is in double digits; however illegal software copies are very frequent and diminish the market's real potential. The telecoms market and the GSM market jointly account for more than 70% of the country's gross revenues in the sector. Overall, the most important prospects for the Turkish market are closely related to wireless broadband and the Internet, wireless connectivity devices, and laptop sales. 3G technologies are also very popular, as well as PDA's, digital and data storage products.
